Obituary

Bertie Marneese Arter

Bertie Marneese Carter Arter, daughter of the late Charles and Mary Carter was born April 30, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she attended public schools. After graduation from Westinghouse High School, she attended Duff's Iron-City Business College and completed a Secretarial-Stenographic course.

Her first job after graduation was at the Dithridge Street YWCA, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1953, Bertie married Douglas Arter who preceded her in death in 1988. Bertie's "World of Work" (while traveling with her husband who was in the military) included many interesting and different types of positions in many states. She was instrumental in being a forerunner for other African-Americans when she was hired at University Hospital located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma as a medical secretary. In her travels, she worked at Brewster Methodist Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, the State Department and the Department of Labor in Washington, DC. Upon completion of her husband's tour of duty in the military, they moved to Los Angeles, California where she worked at Brentwood Veterans Administration Medical Center until her retirement.

Bertie has been an avid church goer and always took an active part in church choirs and volunteered to use her secretarial skills for taking minutes at church meetings. She attended Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Crenshaw United Methodist Church in Los Angeles, California, and is presently a member of Serenity Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

Bertie was a vibrant, faithful and caring person whose candor will be missed. She has to mourn (immediate family), sister Ernestine Ellis, sister-in-law Flora Arter, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

A Celebration of Life will be 12:00 pm Saturday July 19, 2014 at Cartwright Funeral Home in Winchester, VA with Elder Vernon Cartwright officiating.

Family will receive friends on hour before service at the funeral Home.

Interment will be in Milton Valley Cemetery in Berryville, VA.
