Obituary

Bro. John Allen Spencer

John Allen Spencer was born on Jan. 21, 1940, in Winchester, VA to Bessie (Robinson) and Abram Spencer. He attended elementary and high school in Frederick County VA, graduating from Douglas High School in 1958. The family later moved to Front Royal, VA.

After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army, and was deployed and fought in the Vietnam War, where he earned a Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone. He served dutifully for 14 years as a MP, Military Policeman. While stationed in South Korea, he met and married his wife, Chung-Hwa (Bonnie) Kim.

After receiving an honorable discharge, John returned to his home in Front Royal, where he worked as a Corrections Officer for the Virginia Department of Corrections, raising his two children as a single parent with the help of his mother, sisters, and nieces.

In his forties, he was introduced to The Supreme Council of the House of Jacob by his oldest sister, Elds. Ruth Weaver and joined the Front Royal mission. He embraced the church and became an active member for years. Although he lost his way for a little while, it was his greatest desire to become a member again. In 2020, John received his heart's desire and once again became a member of The Supreme Council of the House of Jacob.

John loved hunting and fishing and was an avid golfer. He became a collector of knives, swords, guns, and coins. He loved all sorts of weapons, almost as much as he loved the Washington Football Team (Redskins).

In 2016, John moved to Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in Charlotte Hall, MD. He was known for keeping a stash of snacks and coins for his grandchildren and was affectionately called "Pop Spencer" by the nurses at the nursing home.

On November 12, 2021, at the age of 81, Bro. John Allen Spencer passed away peacefully at Charlotte Hall Veteran's Home in St. Mary's County Maryland. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his daughter, Michelle Lanier, and her husband, Anton and their three (3) children – Christopher, Kayla, and Braden. His son, Herbert Spencer, his girlfriend, Brittany Alexander, and their children – Xavion, Zahlaya, Jaedyn and Kamdyn. His sister, Serina Richards, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Elds. Ruth Weaver and brother, Abraham Spencer.

A Celebration of Life will be 11:00 am November 19, 2021, at Cartwright Funeral Home in Winchester, VA., with Pres. Adv. Elder Israel Brooks.

Interment will be in Orrick Cemetery in Winchester with Military Honors Afforded by the United States Army and Winchester VFW #2123.

John will be missed by so many who knew him.
