IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Cherry Hurley
Lewis Nickens
September 8, 1948 – November 28, 2024
Cherry Hurley Lewis Nickens
Cherry Hurley Lewis Nickens, 76, of Front Royal, Virginia, went to her heavenly home, Thursday, November 28, 2024, at The UVA Health Prince William Medical Center in Manassas, Virginia. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 6, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. at Williams Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church with The Presiding Elder Kevin J. Agee officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in The Good Hope Cemetery in Front Royal, Virginia. Mrs. Nickens was born September 8, 1948, in Front Royal, Virginia, daughter of the late Massie Richard Lewis, Sr and Nellie Mae Curtis Lewis. Mrs. Nickens is survived by her husband of 56 years, Robert Lee Nickens, Sr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jenella Alina Nickens and her brothers, Massie Richard Lewis, Jr., and Ralph Edward Lewis. Surviving are sons, Robert Lee Nickens, Jr., Anthony Jerome Nickens, and Michael Jason Nickens, and a daughter, Shanna Kyleene Nickens. She was a member of The Williams Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church where she faithfully served on many ministries throughout her life.
Cherry graduated from Criser High School in Front Royal, Virginia. She went on to attend Roller Business College and work for the government until she decided to follow another path. She and Robert dreamed of a family of their own. Cherry chose to work closer to home to be able to care for and nurture her children, which is when she became a bus driver for Warren County Public Schools, where she served the community for 37 years before retiring in 2017. She made sure the bus was a safe place for all the children and expected the children to behave. It made her happy to see the students as grown-ups around the community and she was always ready to catch up with them.
Cherry enjoyed many activities throughout her lifetime. She loved The Lord, first, and served on The Usher Board for many years. She enjoyed being the friendly face, greeting everyone inside. She liked sports and liked watching with her sons while trash talking. Every Spring and Fall, you would find her at craft shows looking for unique, one of kind items for her home with her daughter. During the Summer months, you would find her gardening, taking pride in colorful flower arrangements that she displayed around her home. She enjoyed spending time with her closest friend, Betty. Most of all she loved cooking and baking for her family and friends.
Cherry saw herself as a mother to all. She always was available to listen and genuinely cared about everyone. Cherry was adored by her children: Robert Jr., Shanna, Anthony, and Michael as well as her honorary grandchildren, Landen Nelson, and Lincoln Nelson. She will live on in our hearts and will not be forgotten.
Pallbearers are Brandon Cook, Pearl Nickens, Aries Nickens, Brian Murphy, William Lansdown, and Tyler Leavy. Honorary Pallbearers are Landen Nelson, Lincoln Nelson, Faron Russell, and Carroll Russell, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Williams Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church at P. O. Box 279, Front Royal, Virginia 22630.
