IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Clifton Vernon
Etheridge Campbell
May 4, 1947 – November 1, 2023
Clifton Vernon Etheridge Campbell
Cliff was born the only child to Lavenia M. Martin and Clifton V. Etheridge Sr. on May 4, 1947, in Portsmouth, Virginia. He worked as a group home counselor for disadvantaged youths for twenty-plus years before transitioning into becoming a chess master and chess coach. He had a passion for helping people, especially children, and was able to do that by sharing his chess expertise with all, including adults and children with special needs, as well as individuals and schools in impoverished areas.
As a young child Cliff's family moved from Winchester, Virginia to Rahway, New Jersey. He met his wife, Hattie Shockley, in 1967 and was married on June 13, 1968. Together, Cliff and Mona had four children, Tisha, Stanley, Tai, and Jermaine. He would also have two children with Laverne Pyatt — Duan Pyatt and Ellen Lindsey. Then, after Cliff and Deborah Gordon met, they welcomed Nicole Gordon, his youngest child into the world.
Clifton never retired from teaching the game of chess and spent his time playing a fiery game of Uno and trash-talking with those who were close to him. He would most likely be heard to say, "You ain't no Campbell... You a PUNK!"
Cliff's mother and father predeceased him in death. Yet, he is survived by his grandchildren: Mikaela Campbell, Devin Campbell, Xen Martin, Ezekiel Martin, Shaneya Milligan, Nyasia Stewart, Tayahd Campbell, Eesha Campbell, Sky Campbell, and Amor Campbell. His great-grandchildren: Isaiah Mask, Noori Stewart, Symere Campbell, Yasin Stewart.
Cliff left an impact on many people, and we rejoice because he was a gift to the world... Clifton Campbell's legacy lives on.
