Deacon Johnson A. Turner, Jr.
Deacon Johnson A. Turner, Jr. of Berryville, VA., went to be with his Heavenly Father on November 7, 2011. He was born January 31, 1938 in Rockbridge County, VA, the beloved son of the late Johnson A. Turner, Sr. and Martha Anderson Turner of Glasgow, VA. He was educated in the Rockbridge County school system and then entered the Air Force. He joined First Church of Glasgow, VA as a child. In 1961, he married Frances Elizabeth Lyle and in 1954 moved to Berryville, VA where he joined Zion Baptist Church of Berryville, VA. and worked as a security guard and plumber for FEMA.
At Zion Baptist Church he was a member of the Deacon Ministry, Sunday school, Senior Choir, Usher, Sunday school ministry and Missionary Ministry. During his declining years he was a faithful member of Mt. Olive Baptist where he served on the Deacon Ministry and School Ministry. He was a Mason, a member of the Eastern Stars and a foster parent for over 30 children.
He was a devoted husband and father. He survived by his wife, Frances Lyle Turner, two sons, Johnson Turner III (Francine) of Linden, VA and Alexander Turner of Berryville, VA; two daughters, Pamela Liggins (Robert) of Berryville, VA, and Donnisha Turner of Washington, DC; three brothers, Stephen Turner of Glasow, VA, Charles Turner of Glasgow, VA and Norman Turner of California; three sisters, Geneva Lee of Washington, DC, Eva Johnson of Lorton, VA and Thessalonia Turner of Glasgow, VA; three grandchildren, Erice (Joe) Souther of Front Royal, VA, Aliva Turner and Marcus Turner of Linden VA; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Two sisters, Aloma Trahan and Sheila Lunsford both preceded him in death.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 2:00 pm Sunday November 13, 2011 at Cartwright Funeral Home in Winchester, VA. with Pastor
Family will receive friends one hour before service on Sunday November 13, 2011 at the funeral home.
