Ellwood Stephenson

Ellwood Stephenson, 94, of Winchester, VA, died Thursday, August 30, 2012 at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV.

Mr. Stephenson was born December 23, 1917 in Winchester, VA., the son of the late James William Stephenson and Sadie Hunter Stephenson. He had worked for Chapman Motor Company for 17 years. He was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Winchester, VA., a watch care member at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Winchester, VA., and a member of the St. Paul Harmonizers. He was a member of Daniel J. Farrar # 458, Blue Ridge Council # 84 of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia I.B.P.O.E of W, Past State President of VA Association of I.B.P.O.E. of W, Grand Lodge Appointee's Club of VA. I.B.P.O. of W., James R. Turner Civil Liberties # 267, VFW Post # 6044 and DAV Stone Wall Jackson Chapter 9. He was a United States Navy Veteran.

He was married to Mary Russell Stephenson who preceded him in death.

He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Gretchen Maria Roberts (Gordon) of Hampton, VA; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a godchild, Whitney Brook Carter and several nephews and nieces.

Five sisters, Louise Stephenson, Ruth Anderson, Lillian Stephenson Susan Reed Waldon and Imogene Braggs; a brother, James H. Stephenson all preceded him in death.

A Celebration of Life Service will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday September 6, 2012 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Winchester, VA., with Pastor Gilbert M. Mack, Jr. and Pastor Kevin Wilson.

Family will receive friends 6:00 to 7:30 pm Wednesday September 5, 2012 at the church.

Pallbearers will be Family and Friends.

Honorary pallbearers will be Earl Coates and Deacon Charles Smaw.

Interment will be at Orrick Cemetery in Winchester, VA.
