James "Mickey" Hunter Nelson

James Hunter Nelson, 72, known to many as Mickey peacefully went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 24, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV.

Mr. Nelson was born January 17, 1938 in Winchester, Virginia the son of the late Jenitee Robinson Nelson and Hunter Nelson. James graduated from Douglas High School and continued on to study music for a year in Washington DC. He served in the United States Army for 5 years during which one year and 6 months was in Korea.

He attended the John Mann United Methodist Church. He sang in the choir and his favorite song to sing was His Eye is on the Sparrow. He was a talented artist for ceramics. He played the saxophone. He also was a humble, witty and loving man.

Mickey devoted the last 10 years of his life to his lovely granddaughters, Aerial, Jillian and Madison and his precious grandson, Adrial Samad.

James married Sadie Pike Nelson of Winchester, Virginia on December 22, 1989.

He leaves to cherish his memory with his wife, one devoted daughter, Monica C. Holmes (Stephen) of Martinsburg, WV; three sons, Jesse Nelson of Seattle Washington, Jacob Nelson of Tampa Florida, and Ezekiel Nelson of Lexington, Kentucky. One step-daughter, Louanna Blackman of Winchester, Virginia; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Nelson (Delores) of Winchester, Virginia; two sisters, Adele Robinson and Margaret Jones both of Winchester, Virginia; one niece and two nephews and a host of cousins.

Two sisters, Shirley Lucas and Iona Robinson both preceded him in death.

A Celebration of Life will be Thursday January 28, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at Market Street United Methodist Church in Winchester, Virginia with Rev.James Page officiating.

Family will received friends one hour before service at the church. Friends may visit Wednesday January 27, 2010 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at the funeral home.


Interment will be in Orrick Cemetery in Winchester, Virginia with military honors afforded by VFW Post # 2123 of Winchester, Virginia.
