John Henry Chestnut, Sr.

John Henry Chestnut, Sr., 85, of Winchester VA passed away Friday January 5, 2024, at Evergreen Health and Rehab Center in Winchester, VA. His battle with serious medical issues in recent years showed his strength and determination to live his life to the fullest and always with a smile.

John was born August 16, 1938, in Kosciusko Mississippi, the son of the late James H. Chestnut and Violee Carter. John was married to Theresa L Hamilton, who preceded him in death.

He worked until his retirement as a foreman for Southern Scrap in Winchester. Earlier years in his life he was an orderly for Winchester Memorial Hospital, a mechanic for Sears and Roebuck, an operator at American Viscose, and a supervisor at Williams Waste and Trash.

The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to John. He loved to hunt deer and fish or anything he could catch. He enjoyed telling stories (true or not) and spending time with his family. Everyone was a friend, as he never met a stranger. His door was always open, and his smile was contagious. John is survived by three sons John H Chestnut, Jr. of Winchester VA., Simeon Chestnut of Richmond ,VA., Michael Holliday of Winchester VA.; one daughter, Tammy (Thomas) Ashby; stepsons Tyrone Hamilton and Keith (Carrie) Hamilton; twelve grandchildren, Trey Golightly, Shannon Tutwiler, Josiah Ashby, Tommy Ashby, Joshua Ashby, Malachi Holliday, Mikayla Holliday, Elijah Holliday, Misha Moss, Bobbi Hamilton, Hamanni Hamilton, and Nakia Cothran, and a host of great grandchildren; two brothers, James and Will Chestnut of Vaiden MS, one sister, Lula E. Simpson of Waldorf MD and several nieces and nephews.

His sister, Theobia Peterson preceded him in death.

A celebration of life will be on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at 11:00 am at Cartwright Funeral Home in Winchester, VA., with Rev. Dr. Gilbert M. Mack, Jr. officiating.

Visitation will be at 10:00 am to 10:45 at the Funeral Home.

Inurnment will be private at a later date.
