Joseph Lawrence Wallace Lavender

Joseph Lawrence Wallace Lavender, 84, of Winchester, Virginia passed peacefully from the arms of his loving family to the arms of the Lord on Monday June 8, 2009 at home.

Mr. Lavender was born December 16, 1924 in White Post, Virginia. He was the son of the late Haywood Wallace and Estelle Lavender Wallace. He was a member of John Mann United Methodist Church in Winchester, Virginia where he served on the Usher board, trustee board and a member of the United Men's Ministry. He retired from Schewel's Furniture Store at 40 years.

He was married to Ruth A. Jackson Lavender who preceded her in death.

He leaves to cherish his memory three sons, Lawrence E. Lavender of Atlanta, Georgia, Robert P. Lavender and Henry J. Lavender both of Winchester, Virginia; three daughters, Augustine Lavender of Atlanta, Georgia, Dorothy M. Chambers and Ruth A. Robinson both of Winchester, Virginia; one sister, Henrietta Davis of Union Town, PA.; one brother, Earl Wallace of Landover, MD; 19 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces , nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

One son, Josie Jackson; two daughters, JoyAnn Brown and Jean L. Brown, and 11 brothers and sisters all preceded him in death.

A Celebration of Life will be Saturday June 13, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Market Street United Methodist Church in Winchester, Virginia with Rev. James Paige officiating.

Family will receive friends 6 to 8:00 pm Friday June 12, 2009 at Market Street United Methodist Church in Winchester, Virginia.


Interment will be in at Shenandoah Memorial Park in Winchester, Virginia.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

The family wishes to thank Valley Health, the Blue Ridge Hospice, and Apple Blossom Family Practice for all the care they gave.
