Juanita Avonda Mason Barbour

Juanita Avonda Mason Barbour, 93, of Winchester, Virginia formerly of Front Royal, Virginia died January 12, 2009 at Apples Manor in Winchester, Virginia.
Mrs. Barbour was born Summit Point, WV the daughter of the late Robert Mason and Kathryn Green Mason. She was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Front Royal, Virginia. She served countless years overseeing the kitchen activities and preparing for special event. She an active member of the Warren County NAACP, a member of the Cavalette Social Club and a spirited leader in the effort to obtain equal rights in education, housing, shopping and eating facilities. She helped to organize and participated in many acts of protest to further racial equality in her community.

She was married to Lewis F. Barbour on August 4, 1951 in Brooklyn, N.Y., who preceded her in death.

She is the last of her immediate family but she leaves to cherish her memory, several nieces and nephews.

Three sisters, Delores Weaver, Frances Mason and Dorothy Mason; and two brothers, Earl Mason and William Mason all preceded her in death.

A Celebration of Life will be Friday January 16, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Cartwright Funeral Home with the Rev. Alfred Woods officiating.

Family will receive friends Friday one hour before service at the funeral home. Visitation will also be on Thursday January 15, 2009, 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Larry Brown, Darren Travis, Lowell Holmes, James Lockley, William Weaver, and John Yates.

Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park in Winchester, Virginia.
