Marvel Gray Thompson, Sr.
Funeral services for Marvel Gray Thompson, Sr. of Winchester, Virginia will be Thursday February 7, 2008, beginning at 11 a.m., at Mount Carmel Baptist Church located at 1317 South Pleasant Valley Rd., Winchester, VA, with Pastor Gilbert Mack officiating.
The family will receive family and friends on Wednesday, February 6, 2008, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Winchester, Virginia. Friends may visit from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the funeral home.
Interment with Military Honors accorded by the Winchester VFW Post # 2123 will be at Orrick Cemetery immediately after the funeral services.
Pallbearers will be Thomas Dixon, John Ford, Franklin Washington, Franklin Day Jr., Irving Baltimore, and Donald Oates. Honorary Pallbearers will be Ted Ledge, Bob Lake, Rick Baker, and Steven Marquess.
The family encourages all to join them for a "Celebration of Life" meal at Mount Carmel Church, after internment.
Marvel Thompson, Sr., the son of late Wesley Ross and Ruth Washington Thompson, was born on January 4, 1929, in Philadelphia, PA. He passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2008, at Evergreen Nursing home in Winchester. He was 79 years old.
Marvel served his country proudly, as a member of the United States Air Force. He worked at and retired from Alleghany Power Co. where he held the position of store room manager.
Marvel was preceded in death by his loving wife Orissa Taper Thompson, a son Ross Wesley Thompson, and his twin brother Wesley Thompson.
Marvel is survived by three sons and a daughter: Marvel "Tommy" G Thompson II of Winchester, VA (wife-Carolina); Harry Thompson of Richmond, VA (wife-Michelle); Grant David Thompson of Harrisonburg, VA (wife-Jennifer); and daughter Ruth Marcia Thompson-Scott of Winchester, VA (husband-Marvin); fourteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sister-in-laws Doris Thompson and Mibert Day.
A devout Christian, Marvel was a longtime member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church where he serving as a member of the Men's Chorus, Senior Choir, and a past Trustee.
He was also an active member in his community, serving in the past in several capacities including: little league baseball coach and umpire; member of the Apple Blossom Committee; member of the Winchester Park and Recreation Board; member of the Winchester Hospital Board; member of the Judges Athletic Association; and member of the Northern Shenandoah Coaches and Athletic Committee.
Marvel will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
