Richard Lee "Gippy” Turner

Richard Lee Turner of Haymarket, Virginia, 82, passed away on September 23, 2026, in Leesburg, Virginia, surrounded by love. To his grandchildren, he was lovingly known as Grandaddy Richard and Gippy.

Richard was born on November 14, 1943, to Josephine Elizabeth Turner Reid and Alonzo Robinson. His family also included his stepfather, the late James M. Reid.

He was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend whose memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.

Richard was a quiet man and a true homebody who enjoyed the simple comforts of home. He loved horse racing and trying his luck with lottery tickets, cheering on the Washington Redskins, watching the Game Show Network, and keeping up with his favorite soap operas. These familiar routines brought him joy and became part of the everyday memories his family will always carry with them.

Richard also shared a special bond with his cousin, Alice Turner Lloyd, with whom he spoke often and whose companionship meant a great deal to him.

Richard had a strong connection to horse racing through his work at the racetrack earlier in his life. He later spent many years working at the Dulles Airport Marriott, where he built a long career and many lasting memories.

Richard leaves to cherish his memory five daughters: Stephanie (Andrew) Shevitz of Haymarket, Virginia; Monica (Stanley) Davis of Manassas, Virginia; Tracey (Bernard) Salinas of Remington, Virginia; Josephine Lorraine (David) Peterson of Aiken, South Carolina; and Lillian Regina Thompson of Matthews, North Carolina; and one son, Anthony McKinney of Manassas, Virginia.

He was the proud grandfather of Christopher Stephen Turner; Petey Shevitz; Seanna Jade Shevitz; Isaiah Lee Shevitz; Kavon Brighton Davis; Travon Nicholas Davis; Audra Ann Davis; Niko Salinas; Karlee Salinas; David Peterson Jr.; Dante Peterson; Tiffany Bishop; Zaire Holmes; and Tiarra Holmes.

He was also blessed to be a great-grandfather to David Peterson III, Zahara Amoni Peterson, Amira Bishop, and Dino Bishop.

Richard is also survived by his sister, Dorothy (Richard) Robinson of Aldie, Virginia, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Richard was preceded in death by his mother, Josephine Elizabeth Turner Reid; his stepfather, James M. Reid; his maternal grandmother, Cordelia Bundy Turner; and his brother, Joseph Turner.

Richard’s family will remember him for the love he gave, the memories they shared, and the lasting place he will always hold in their hearts. His legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister, nieces, nephews, and the many lives he touched.

    Celebration of Life will be 12:00 pm at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Upperville, Virginia with the Rev. Philip Lewis officiating.

           Interment will follow in West View Cemetery Upperville, Virginia.

            Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church

                              Though his physical presence will be deeply missed, his love and memory will remain with his family always.
