IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert Lee
Cross
October 23, 1926 – November 15, 2024
Robert Lee Cross
Robert Lee Cross, 98, of Winchester, Virginia, died Friday, November 15, 2024, in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV. Robert was born October 23, 1926, in Berryville, Virginia, the son of the late John Rufus Cross and Gelettia Richardson Cross.
Robert Cross, a cherished member of the Winchester, Virginia community, passed away surrounded by love and gratitude for a life well lived. Known for his strong work ethic and creative spirit, Robert spent his early years contributing to the local economy through work in orchards and a brickyard.
Drafted during his senior year of high school, Robert was granted leave during basic training to return to Berryville and graduate with his class. Following the conclusion of World War II, he was honorably discharged, only to be recalled to serve for two years during the Korean War.
After his service, Robert made Winchester his home, where he found both professional fulfillment and personal joy, meeting the love of his life, Mary Cook. A dedicated mason of the King Hiram Masonic Lodge #53, he exemplified the values of service and integrity.
Robert began his professional career at the Shenandoah Valley Bank before transitioning to the Winchester Public School system as a bus operator and driving instructor, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students.
Robert's life reflected a deep appreciation for both natural and man-made materials. This passion eventually blossomed into his hobby as a folk artist. With boundless creativity and meticulous care, he transformed recycled and repurposed materials into sculptural masterpieces. Each of his works, often requiring six months to a year or more to complete, reflected his dedication to his craft and imaginative vision. His artistic legacy lives on through a collection of his works proudly displayed at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester (https://www.themsv.org/creative-nature-art-robert-l-cross/) and select pieces showcased at Mt. Carmel Church, also in Winchester.
A man of deep faith and song, Robert was a dedicated member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Berryville, where he served as a lay reader and sang in the choir. He also represented the congregation as a Delegate to the Episcopal Conference. Additionally, he found great joy in worshipping alongside his wife at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.
Robert's life was anchored by the love of his devoted wife, Mrs. Mary Cook Cross, who survives him. He also leaves behind a cherished extended family, including numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren.
He is preceded in death by his six sisters – Gelettia Newlin, Cynthia Bunkley, Mary Cross, Nannie West, Edith Hunter, and Sylvia Cross Talley – and his three brothers, William Cross, Edward Cross, and Francis Cross.
A commemoration of Robert's extraordinary life will take place on Monday, November 25, at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Winchester, with Rev. Dr. Gilbert M. Mack, Jr. officiating.
The viewing is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., followed by his Homegoing Celebration at 12:00 p.m.
Interment will be at Orrick Cemetery in Winchester, with Military Honors Afforded by the United States Army and the VFW Post 2123 of Winchester. Robert will be laid to rest among the community he so profoundly impacted.
After the interment, the family will welcome friends at the Mt. Carmel Fellowship Hall.
Robert Cross' memory will forever be cherished by those whose lives he touched with his kindness, artistry, and devotion. His contributions to family, faith, and art ensure that his legacy will inspire generations to come.
