IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Wellesley "Sonny"
Johnson
November 29, 1935 – April 2, 2025
Wellesley "Sonny" Johnson
Wellesley "Sonny" Johnson, 89, of Winchester, VA passed away April 2, 2025, at Winchester Medical Center. Sonny was born November 29, 1935, in Westmoreland, Jamaica to Whiell Johnson and Lee Mack Blake, both who preceded him in death. He was the eldest of eighteen siblings.
Sonny, as he was affectionately known, was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His journey on this earth was nothing short of amazing. Sonny came to the United States in 1968, where he worked for Dr. Boyd on his farm and apple orchard. While in the States, he met the love of his life, Essie Johnson; they were married November 25, 1977. Sonny is the father to Wellesley "Domino" Johnson Jr, Jean Richardson, Command Sgt. Major Clarence Richardson, Charmaine Israel, Dionnie Johnson, and Michelle Johnson. Sonny was an excellent provider for his family. In 1983 he started his journey working for Shockey, where he later retired in 2002.
During his free time, he loved to be around family and friends, you could always find him at the head of the spades table or playing dominoes with his buddies. In other spare time you could catch him in the basement watching a good old' Western, in the kitchen whipping together a good meal or out back tending to his garden. However, the household was easily divided on Football Sunday with his unshared, love and dedication for the "Redskins"!
Sonny became a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in 2016, where he was baptized during a private family ceremony.
Sonny is survived by a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and cousins, who will all miss his cheerful smile and welcoming spirit.
A Celebration of Life will be 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Winchester, VA., with Rev Dr. Gilbert M. Mack, Jr. officiating.
Visitation will be one hour before service at the church.
Interment will be in Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, Va.
